Population that was displaced by natural disaster, war, or general insecurity is among the most vulnerable parts of the global population. Refugees or Internally Displaced Persons (IDP) often live in large camps or flee into cities. Here they are often as well exposed to risks ranging from natural disasters to health risks or political instability.
This website currently presents a prototype providing information on natural disasters in the proximity of (selected) refugee/IDP camps, as well as health and demographics data and statistics. While some part of the information is provided by UNHCR (location, health and demographics) other information is provided through online services like GDACS for fast onset disasters [link], NOAA [link] for three day weather forecasts, and MODIS [link] for active fire locations.
The online services are combined to a Vulnerable Population Index (VPI) that allows a fast assessment of locations at risk.
This prototype includes at the moment 74 camps and health and demographic information from 2006-2010.
